The Amazon region is characterized for its large areas of rainforest, where trees such as ceibo, sande, and caoba can easily grow and reach a height of 50 meters. Nevertheless, there are areas where water replaces firm ground, rivers suddenly become narrow canals, medium and large lagoons appear, and canoes are the only way to get around in between the trees and vegetation. These are the flooded Amazon forests, which are protected in its majority within this great reserve. Cuyabeno Jungle Tour 6 days
This protected area is named after the Cuyabeno River, which overflows in its midpoint creating a 14 lagoon complex and also the most extensive wetlands of the Ecuadorian Amazon. These flooded forests are the territory of dolphins, manatees, alligators, anacondas, otters, and of the water guarango tree, the most unique tree in this reserve; thanks to its special adaptations, it can grow on the shores of rivers and lagoons, creating a magic and mysterious environment that attract thousands of visitors every year. The reserve is also considered one of the most culturally diverse protected areas in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The indigenous communities of Siona, Secoya, Cofan, Kichwa, and shuar live in this area.

Upon arrival at the Cuyabeno bridge, your guide will meet you and transport you by motorized canoe to our base camp; Cuyabeno River Lodge. After breakfast and an initial rest, we will have a short walk in the afternoon on the Ceibo trail. We will then eat lunch, and spend the night in the lodge.
After a quick breakfast, we will board the canoes that we will be using over the next four days to move around the reserve. We will start our way up the Cuyabeno river until we arrive to Paso Tigre, and we will have a short hike for about two hours where we might be lucky enough to see Peccary’s, a species of wild pigs. When we get back to our canoe, we will have the opportunity to go fishing for Piranhas, and we’ll head even deeper into the Cuyabeno, arriving to the Canangueno Lake, where later on that evening, we will have a nocturnal hike to go see Caimans; we will spend the night at the lake. (As a point of reference: We can either camp in Paso Tigre or the Canangueno Lake; depending on the distance travelled on that day).
(Optional: Requests for early morning bird walks are more than welcome).After breakfast, we will get on our canoe, enjoying beautiful flora and fauna. We will continue up river until we get to Laguna Grande, which harbours some really interesting animals, such as Pink and Grey Dolphins, Giant River Turtles and the elusive Anaconda. We’ll find a good place to eat lunch and will rest for a bit. Then we’ll continue our journey through the Cuyabeno River, until we arrive to the Siona Community, where we can see their customs and experience their ways of making food, such as the Yuca bread or Casabe. We will then make our way a bit down river where we will set up camp for the evening.
Today, we will make our way down river towards Montufar; where we’ll have a short walk through this almost untouched part of the Cuyabeno, and we’ll fish some huge catfish if you’re lucky. (As a point of reference: We can either camp in Aguas Negras or Montufar; depending on the distance travelled on that day).
Today, we will make our way deeper into the Cuyabeno River until we arrive to Aguas Negras; a beautiful black water river which has a high number of both exotic and unique birds that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. We will then enjoy great hikes through the jungle and be able to learn more about this unique ecosystem with the help of our Guide. We will spend the night in Aguas Negras.
On this last day, we will have an early breakfast and make our way back to the Cuyabeno River Lodge. Luckily, we’ll be able to see anything we didn’t get to see on the way into the reserve. Upon our arrival to the lodge, we will eat dinner and make our way towards the Cuyabeno Bridge to get your transportation back to Quito
