Climbing to Cotacachi Volcano
The Cotacachi (Cutacachi or Mama Cutacachi in Quichua or Kichwa) is a volcano that is located in the Imbabura province, Cotacachi canton, in Ecuador. It reaches an elevation of 4939 m.a.s.l. Climbing to Cotacachi Volcano
To the northeast of the volcano is the city of Cotacachi and to the southeast, the Cuicocha lake.
The Cotacachi volcano was active 3000 or 2000 years ago, but its crater collapsed inward or imploded and formed the lagoon with melted snow. Another smaller eruption formed the islets. In front of the lake you can see the imposing Cotacachi volcano, from whose melting Cuicocha feeds.
